Sew Modest Studio’s Lead Instructor and Founding Director, LaTerry Abdulnoor Yaseen, is an internationally-trained Fashion and Jewelry Designer, having studied Fashion Design and Fashion Photography in London, England.
I deeply believe in the art of fashion and how art has always been the center of revolutionary change, and serves as an outlet for our emotions. This is an opportunity to change the landscape by which we process our griefs and misery. My art as activism movement centers mindful, slow and sustainable fashion. The proliferation of fast fast, fad fashion, can't wear it more than once is literally killing our planet, killing the artsy and craftsmanship, killing our sense of self, creativity and uniqueness. It's destroying the art of fashion to the point that we are bombarded by cheap replicas of the same design repeated throughout the market. This gives way to "shock value" fashion that is void of voice, perspective and vision simply chasing the next like, share or hope of going viral. The mark that I hope to leave on the world is returning towards mindfulness, detailed artsy and craftsmanship in fashion design.
LaTerry Ya'seen is the Executive Director of Sew Modest Studio, a Fashion Design and Sewing school. She loves helping people bring their vision, voice and perspective to life through fashion. She has spent the majority of her career in the Fashion and Technology industry, gaining experiences in areas such as design, data analytics, and education. While operating a small business is her primary job function by day, LaTerry also enjoys writing poetry, photography and interior design.
I deeply love my community, it is vibrant and nurturing, diverse, multifaceted and cultured. I’m perpetually blessed by the amazing people I encounter and their willingness to share their talents and experiences for the betterment of others.

Ravyn Hill
Ravyn is a talented and resourceful alterations specialist, currently working fulltime as a professional Seamstress in the wardrobe department of Motor City Casino. She began her sewing journey, as a self taught sewist, scouring YouTube for basic sewing tutorials and projects. Like most people she inevitably encountered the question of, "Am I doing this right?" This uncertainty led her to google 'Sewing Lessons near me' and she found herself on the same website you are! Ravyn signed up for the Introductory Garment Construction Class, it was such a transformational experience that she began to volunteer at Sew Modest Studio. After a year-long apprenticeship she began teaching children and adults the fundamentals of sewing and garment construction. In addition to being a masterful sewist, she is also an incredibly talented crochet artist. She is now the Lead Instructor and Curriculum Developer for the Alterations Sewing courses at Sew Modest Studio!
Gi’ana Horsley
Gi'ana started at Sew Modest Studio when she earned a full tuition scholarship to the Summer Camp program in 2022. After graduating out of the program she began working as our apprentice and is now leading our Kids Sewing Department! Which is amazing since she herself started sewing at just 10 years old and now she is able to help our young sewists bring their fashion dreams to reality. Even though she is young she has incredible talent and has been working tremendously to develop her skills and passion. She's living proof that there is no age requirement for becoming a skilled couturier. Her talent, work and dedication are evident in all her creations. Prior to starting with Sew Modest Studio she took a couple of sewing classes at her high school. Gi'ana currently runs a custom design business in which she creates corsets, prom and special event gowns for clients.
